Purpose
Research grants are being offered for new and ongoing clinical/laboratory research projects in the field of dermatology. All research must be conducted in the United States. These grants are open to:
• Regular members of the Chicago Dermatological Society
• Residents in Training
• Fellows
• Ph.D. degree holders whose major appointments is in academic dermatology
Applicants who are not regular members of CDS will need to be sponsored by a member of the society. Grants will be for one year, and typically range from $ 2,500 - $ 5,000, although unique projects requiring funding up to $10,000 may be considered. These awards may not be used for payment of salary, indirect costs, or travel.
Research proposals will be evaluated and scored based on: quality of written application; likelihood of success; relevance in dermatology; and economics (cost of project against potential scientific gain).
Proposal
A brief discussion of the aims and relevance of the proposed research project must be attached to this application in sufficient detail for evaluation by the Scientific Committee. If previously published material is submitted in support of this application, 1 copy must be provided as an appendix.
Biographical Sketch
Attach a brief biographical sketch or curriculum vitae, not to exceed two pages, and include recent relevant bibliography.
Letter of Recommendation
For non-Society members, a supporting letter from the applicant’s immediate supervisor is requested and must accompany this application.
Human Subjects
Applications originating from academic centers and which are also related to research on human subjects must be accompanied by institutional approval of the type required by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Multiple Applications
Because the Society has limited resources, no more than one application for a grant can be accepted from a single individual. From individuals under contract to academic centers, applications will only be accepted from persons holding a faculty rank of assistant professor or lower. Faculty members of any rank may serve as grant application preceptors, however.
Award Process
Applicants must be present to accept their awards at the May meeting of the Chicago Dermatological Society. In the event that an applicant cannot attend, the Society office must be contacted no later than May 1st outlining the circumstances and designating a substitute representative who will accept the award. Applicants not represented will forfeit the award to another qualifying applicant.
Distribution of Funds
Grant monies are disbursed starting July 1. Where funds are granted to individuals in academic institutions they must be paid directly to the institutional fiscal officer designated in the application, and are to be used only for the recipient and project for which the application was made. These funds cannot be used for salary, indirect costs, or travel. A summary report of research progress to date must be submitted by May 1 of the year following the grant award followed by a brief presentation of findings before the CDS membership at its May monthly meeting. All research funds are awarded on the condition that Chicago Dermatological Society support is acknowledged in any publications resulting from Society research grant support. Five reprints or photocopies of resultant publication(s) must be submitted to the Society office.
Deadline
Applications and supporting materials must be received at the Society office no later than March 1. Approved applications will be funded as of July 1.
